I’ve created two versions of this bag: one in true peacock colors (deep version) and another one in pastel palette. There will be kits available for purchase at Wool Warehouse (international shipping) for both versions HERE and HERE on July 20. (These links are affiliate, I may be compensated with a tiny amount from purchases made via them. My CAL will be free. If you would like your friends to learn more about this CAL and kits – please, give them the link to my blog, instead of sharing kits links. Thank you in advance for support!) If you would like to read more details about the kits and their composition - please, check THIS post.
Add this pattern to your Ravelry Queue
Each kit will include 6 skeins of Linen Soft yarn by Scheepjes, bag handle, magnetic clasp, fabric lining, interfacing and D-rings… Just everything you need (except of the crochet hook) to finish up your own bag. I am very grateful to Scheepjes and DeBondt for sponsoring this CAL and providing me with all materials. Linen Soft is one of my favourite yarns. Please, read my review about it HERE.
UPDATE: CAL pattern will be translated and available in Dutch, German, Spanish, Swedish, Finnish, Danish, French and Hebrew.
If you feel like choosing other shades for this project - you can look at the colors chart and choose yours at Wool Warehouse* (international shipping) and Paradise Fibers* (US). You will need 2 skeins of main color (the same shade as for the bag's band) and 1 skein in 4 more colors. And you can find other materials and supplies in your local craft store.
The story behind Peacock Tail Bag design
Last year after my first ever Circles of the Sun CAL was finished, I knew already I will design something else in the future. And give it away as a CAL. Circles of the Sun were aimed to introduce overlay crochet to you, and to give an opportunity for mastering this technique with small and simple square projects.
The response was unbelievable! I am so happy you loved overlay crochet as much as I do. I got many e-mails and private messages with pictures of different overlay crochet projects. And I decided to continue introducing this fantastic technique to you. If you haven’t heard about overlay crochet before, please, read all the information, tips and tricks HERE.
To be honest this bag design was not born at once. At first I didn’t even think about the bag. This idea belongs to Esther from It’s All In A Nutshell, whom you may know very well since my previous CAL and many other CALs she is making video’s for (by the way Esther has kindly agreed to help me with my new CAL as well (yay!!!), so please, expect very quality, detailed and professional videos!). Another great news is that CAL will be hosted in Official CCC Social group on Facebook - many thanks to Kimberly Slifer and Susan Cutler Cutrer.
The other day we were chatting with Esther on Facebook and I told her about my idea. She said, yeah, cool, but don’t design something large and busy. Keep your project simple but nice. Something that is made quickly, with no extra large effort but what can be really used. And I thought about the bag. With mandala shape. Something that doesn’t look like anything else. And then the stroke happened! And I imagined my bag in the shape and colors of a peacock tail.
I crocheted endless number of samples before I was satisfied with the pattern. And then I remade it endless number of times again, before I was satisfied with the shape. So this bag design is a kid of hard work, lots of thinking and many sleepless nights. :)
What you should know
Release of first part of this CAL is planned for Wednesday, August 17. Closely before this date I will publish detailed information and everything you need to know: how the CAL will be run, where to find the posts, which tutorials to look for and so on.
If you like my Peacock Tail Bag and would like to purchase the kit but have never tried overlay crochet – please, check patterns for Circles of the Sun first. The style and pattern writing of coming CAL will be exactly the same. So already now you can see what to expect.
The difficulty level of this CAL is Intermediate. It should make no problem at all if you are already familiar with overlay crochet. But if you are a total beginner, please, make sure to check your skills first. I believe that with detailed videos this pattern will work well even for advanced beginner. But please, be aware that this project is not a “lazy” one, as it demands lots of attention, concentration and counting (as any other project in overlay crochet). But if you like challenges – I promise you will not be bored a single second, as your crocheted work will be changing and transforming after every stitch and row.
Seems like this is everything I wanted to share with you today. If you have specific questions, please ask them in comments below.
You can subscribe to my newsletter not to miss a single post and update. You can also follow me on Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram.
Stunning bag. Can you tell us how long the CAL will run for please. Thank you. Anne
ReplyDeleteHi Anne! Good question, thank you! This CAL will have 6 parts (crochet and putting the bag together) + there will be separate post (7th part) about sewing the lining. So the last crochet bit will be released on Wednesday, September 21. And then the lining part - next week.
DeleteThank you for your response. I have my yarn and am ready to go. I have done my first Circles of Life block as a practice piece and found it easy to understand.
DeleteI love your beautiful patterns! My crochet fingers have been itching for a new CAL from you ever since the Circles Of The Sun. This, too, is a beauty!
ReplyDeleteHi Carolyn! I hope you will enjoy this CAL!
DeleteI am SO excited by this project! I already have two friends who are willing to do it with me so we will meet each week to work together!
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful! Please, don't forget to share your progress pictures with me :)
DeleteI did your previous CAL, Circles of the Sun, and I enjoyed more than I can tell you. I made a cushion in the same colours as yours and my sister in law asked for another one but with different colors. Thank you so much. I'm waiting your new project with enthousiasm!!! lol.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteWhat a lovely design!! I've been wanting to try Linen Soft, and I love bags. Your CAL will be so much fun!
ReplyDeleteLinen Soft is a very nice yarn. It differs from everything I tried before. It may seem stiff at the first try, but it's getting softer after the washing.
DeleteBeautiful bag! Love the peacock colours!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait!!!
ReplyDeleteAnother truly gorgeous project, Tatiana! Thank you for your generosity. <3
ReplyDeleteOoo! I think my crochet hook is calling ...
ReplyDeleteTatiana , what a lovely bag, love the peacock colours a great tribute to all of your hard work. I am sure the CAL will be a great success.
ReplyDeleteThank you Lois! I believe this bag can be made in any colors and colorways. But to be honest Peacock version is my favourite.
DeleteHi Tatsiana - So happy you are doing this CAL - gorgeous pattern and I love bags - and was fascinated doing overlay crochet for the first time on your Circles of the Sun. I love that we can get all we need to make it in a kit as well :) Thank you thank you Maggie
ReplyDeleteThank you Maggie! I am very glad I managed to finish this design, so that now I can share it with you :)
DeleteGorgeous bag. Eagerly waiting for the CAL.
ReplyDeleteAwesome design. I will be joining all the other ladies and you for this CAL!
ReplyDeleteHi, any chance you will release a kit also with Deramores. I live in the United Arab Emirates and Woolwarehouse does not want to ship here. Deramores is very good, items reach me 14 working days sharp, never a problem.
ReplyDeleteThanks
Barbara
Hi Barbara! At the moment kits are being prepared only by Wool Warehouse. But Linen Soft is sold by other retailers, too. Hope this helps!
DeleteI'm gonna make this beautiful Bag. .
ReplyDeleteThank you for putting together the CAL for your lovely bag. I am looking forward to the CAL. I am wondering if the bag handle, etc. will be available as a stand alone kit for those of us who might use yarn other than the Scheepjes? Wool Warehouse takes FOREVER to ship to the United States and I want to make sure I have my yarn by Aug. 17. I know about Paradise Fibers, but it sounds like only the Scheepjes yarn is available from them and not the pieces to finish the bag. Thank you! --Rita Zimmerman
ReplyDeleteHi Rita! Wool Warehouse will only sell complete kits with everything. But I believe you can find another bag handle for your bag if you want to purchase yarn separately... :)
DeleteOkay. Thanks for replying. :)
DeleteThis is gorgeous! I'm looking forward to taking part. What size of crochet hook will I need?
ReplyDeleteThe size of the hook will depend on your yarn. With Linen Soft I used 2.75mm hook. you can also use 3mm. Just please be aware, that the gauge is quite tight.
DeleteHello - will I need a sewing machine to finish the bag, or will it be possible to do by hand? thank you x
ReplyDeleteHi Mingo! I used a sewing machine but you can absolutely sew the lining by hand.
DeleteHi, I've just purchased the peacock colourway pack.... I can't wait to start, the bag is just gorgeous <3 Clare xx
ReplyDeleteI'm sure you posted it but I can't find the colors to buy for the pastel one. They are just LOVELY!! Would you please list them? I didn't see them as a kit either.
ReplyDeletePastel kit is available for purchase both via Wool Warehouse and De Breibar. Please, check the links in this post :) But anyway here are the shades: 1 x 612, 1 x 613, 2 x 619, 1 x 624, 1 x 629
DeleteI found it after posting that. Sorry but thank you for the response!! I used to never like pastels but as I have aged I find the softer colors more agreeable.
ReplyDeleteIt's a weird phenomenon.
I just might be making this for my lovely Aunt!!
Hi Tatiana. I just received my peacock bag kit. It is beautiful, I can't wait for the 11st clue, thank you so much.
ReplyDeleteLorri
Received the kits yesterday. Beautiful yarn!
ReplyDeleteis it wool or cotton thread dear
ReplyDeleteIt's Linen Soft by Scheepjes. Please, check all the detals on Ravelry pattern page :)
DeleteBoth kits are Out of Stock...😭
ReplyDeleteThe kits should be back to stock very soon!
DeleteWhat size will the bag be? I'd like to make it for my daughters, one of which is a mom and needs room, the other one who is allergic (smile) to large bags. Looks like this one might be good for both?
ReplyDeleteHi Maude! I am so sorry for late reply. The size of the finished bag depends on the yarn and hook you use. My bag is approx. 39 cm (15 ½”) wide in widest place and 35 cm (13 ¾”) tall. I hope that helps :)
DeleteI would like to join with you. I didn't be sure that you started or nit how can I join to you 😊😊😊 I love your croche. Thanks from Turkey
ReplyDeleteThere is no official join or sign up for this CAL. If you are on Facebook you can follow it in CCC Social group. you can also join my group on Ravelry. But if you don't have any accounts in social networks - you can just see tutorials on my blog each week and make your own bag with everybody else.
