Spirits of Life CAL was inspired by Native American textile and fiber art. Recently I have been looking a lot into this theme. My aim was not to copy exact patterns and to reproduce them. Instead I was trying to translate the same feeling through my wrap. Each element and pattern doesn’t have any meaning. It’s just my own perception and imagination. :)

As you may probably know this CAL will be about the wrap. In fact it is a large (approx. 63cm x 180cm) rectangle shawl which can be worn both as a wrap and as a scarf, for example. In the pictures below you can see that the length is enough to wrap it around the shoulders.
Spirits of Life wrap comes in three colour ways: Spirit of the Lake, Spirit of the Volcano and Spirit of the Orchid. Each sample is made with mixture of two Scheepjes yarns: Spirit and Catona (reviewed HERE and HERE), to imitate mute and semi-colored effects of traditional textile pieces. I have worked with both yarns before and truly love their look and the feel. The mixture of soft and slightly fluffy Spirit and stiffness and rich colors of Catona gave the wrap a very nice warmth and excellent drape!
Official kits produced and nicely packed by Scheepjes in all three colorways are already available for pre-order via some local stockiest (also at Knotty House* (Canada) and will be available for purchase at large retailers, such as Wool Warehouse HERE* and Deramores* (both in UK with international shipping), Loveknitting* (US) on September 27th, 2017.
And while waiting for the start date, you can add this CAL to your queue on Ravelry HERE.
Just to remind you, the CAL will begin on October 18th, 2017 and will run for 9 weeks. Last part will be released on December 13th, just in time to finish your wrap for Christmas – for yourself or for friends and family members.
The patterns/tutorials will be released here on my blog weekly. They will be FREE and translated at least to 10 languages: English UK and US, Dutch, Spanish, German, French, Hebrew, Swedish, Afrikaans, Polish and Finnish. Tutorials will include written instructions, charts and progress pictures and will be accompanied by partial video’s to guide you through every step. The CAL will be hosted in Official CCC Social group on Facebook (by Susan Cutrer) where you will find the answers to all questions and get full support from admins and other members.
You were asking which crochet level this CAL is aimed to. This is a very difficult question. Spirits of Life is definitely not a total beginner’s project. But no intricate stitches were used to crochet this wrap. All stitches are very basic and only their placement can be tricky sometimes. If you are an “adventurous beginner” and like to learn new things, you can try this CAL out.
Three different techniques were mixed together: Overlay Crochet, Mosaic Crochet and C2C (corner-to-corner) crochet. In coming weeks I will keep you posted with details about the techniques and will give you links to tutorials, so that you can practice and see if this CAL is right for you.
I hope I could answer your possible questions. More information and details will come in next weeks. And here is the picture of me wearing Spirit of the Orchid. I am sending many thanks to my friends @Oleg Ignatovich (photographer) and @Natasha Zus (model) for such atmospheric pictures. Be sure to check their Instagram to see lots of other wonderful pictures!
UPDATE: you can find Important Notes for this project HERE. And General Information with links to all patterns is HERE.

ReplyDeleteI thought I had decided on my color choice when you gave us the sneak peek, but seeing the wraps in these stunning photos has made choosing so much more difficult. The wrap is so beautiful, though, that I know whichever color I choose, I will be happy. Can't wait to get started!
ReplyDeleteI love this design and I will be following your website for these patterns, but this is a posting question. I saw Miss Neriss's email, and she said you will be posting links on the Official CCC Social Group. Will that page be active? I have been unable to access it for weeks.

Unfortunately, neither LoveCrochet.com or LoveKnitting.com have the yarn kits available for preorder. The only shop I've found in the U.S. that is taking preorders is the lovely Stitched Naturally (https://stitchednaturally.com) in Wisconsin. (This is also the only shop to carry Scheepjes Whirl.) So you don't need to wait any longer if you live in the U.S. to preorder, and you don't need to pay overseas shipping rates. Your only concern now is choosing which kit to buy--the hardest part.
ReplyDeleteI crocheted for years and have practically stopped because I taught myself to knit and have concentrated on learning the vsrious stitches and techniques. However, when i opened your email today and saw this beautiful wrap, I wanted to join in you CAL. It will be a gift for my daughter. I am very excited to join this crochet project. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteHola!

Hi all, looking for the CAL kit on Loveknitting/Lovecrochet and not finding it. Anyone else been able to find it? If so, what did you search for?
ReplyDeleteI still can't find it and it's Oct 2nd...
ReplyDeleteHi. I will not be able to purchase the yarn used in the kit as I am on a strict budget but have other fingering yarn here. have quite a bit of Loops & Threads Woolike. May I use that instead? I have not compared the WPI to yours as of yet.
ReplyDeleteI have never seen the yarn you mention. so I am not help, sorry. but if you can meet the gauge - then, probably, you can use it :)
DeleteMaking this for my daughter. Was so excited yo get the email that my kit is on the way!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! Excited to start!
ReplyDeleteHi it looks beautiful! I live in Colombia and no Scheepjes available here, and shipping is a guarantee for losing the order. There are lots of colours available here, but how thick would scheepjes be? For needle 2 mm, 3 mm etc? To try to find something local here which would be workable. Scheepjes is cotton? Or synthetic? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteTatsiana these are so so beautiful. I had the pleasure of seeing them up close at Black Sheep Barn last weekend and I was in awe. I cannot wait to get started. I am going to make one each for my sister, brother and myself in each of the colour ways. We have native American ancestry, and they will suit us perfectly! Much love xxx
