I hope that you are well prepared and that you practiced all three techniques introduced in the Important Notes HERE. Today’s part is a kind of relaxed. You will not be making any intricate stitches. It is more about getting used to the gauge and to different types of yarn. Part 1 consists of colorful stripes made with both Spirit and Catona yarns with a small zig-zag pattern in overlay crochet.
BEFORE you actually begin to crochet, please, make these two important things.
1. Organize your colors. Each color in the pattern is marked with the letter (A,B,C…). Please, make an organizer and match each letter with the exact yarn. Because corresponding shades of Spirit and Catona can look very similar in the pictures, I would highly recommend you to refer ONLY to written instructions, and not the pictures.
Below you will see the picture representing color change for each colorway (Lake, Volcano and Orchid). But this is just a small help for you, so that you don’t use a totally different color. But again (!) while changing colors, please, refer to written pattern!
Here is the color key (you will also find it in the written pattern):

2. Please, remove labels from the skeins and weigh each and every one.
If you are using the kit it is very important that you use exactly the same amount of each color as given in the pattern. In the files below (choose your language and download it) you will find the chart with yarn amounts in grams. For all 9 parts!! Please, weigh your yarn before and after each part is finished and carefully takes notes about your amounts (you can put them into printed instructions into the same chart as mine). This will give you a very clear vision about how much yarn you used. And if you are on track or not.
I used 3.25mm (D) hook but you may need to go one-two sizes up or down to obtain correct gauge.

I have created a video tutorial to help you understand written instructions better. Because the pattern is quite straightforward, the video doesn’t contain step by step instructions for every row. The video is meant as an additional help.
As you may notice, the video doesn’t have sound… and this is not because of technical problem. It was done on purpose. There were many reasons why I decided not to add any voice explanations. One of them is the CAL is translated to many languages, and far not everyone is speaking English. Instead I tried to use a “universal crochet language” and my hands to explain the pattern. And hopefully you will find it helpful and useful!
This and all next video’s will be posted on my YouTube channel HERE.
Happy crocheting! Can’t wait to see your finished samples!! You can post them in Official CCC Social group on Facebook (official host of Spirits of Life CAL) and also in my Ravelry group HERE. Every week there will be a separate thread created for each Part of the CAL.
If you don’t have a kit but would like to purchase one, they are still available (at the time of posting) at Wool Warehouse HERE* (UK, international shipping) and Loveknitting HERE* (US).
UPDATE: Part 2 is HERE.

Hooray! I’m so looking forward to this CAL (and really pleased that Wednesdays are my day off, so I can get going straight away!)
ReplyDeleteThanks You Tatsiana for this highly anticipated CAL!! Hope you enjoy it, as I absolutely will xxx
ReplyDeleteCould you tell me what hook size to use? I can't seem to see it in the pattern.
ReplyDeleteMaybe I missed it.
i have just read that a 3.25 hook is recommended and to make a gauge swatch. Happy to do so and note that it is 20 sts and 16 rows for 10cm x 10cm.. What sort of stich is this , DC or SC (us terms)
ReplyDeleteThanks
Hi Donna, the gauge is given for one row of dc and one row of sc (US terms). You will be alternating rows for a gauge swatch.
Deletewhat size crochet hook we need to use
ReplyDelete3.25mm. But you may need a different size
Deletemy apologies. Please disregard the previous too comment. I have since found the in the general information the stitches to use for the swatch. a row of dc followed by sc.
ReplyDeleteI have completed my swatch and all is good with the 3.25mm hook.
I am so sorry to jump the gun with questions, just very excited to get started and expected to see the hook size in instructions. I couldn't do my swatch until today, my yarn only arrived yesterday.
You must feel frustrated at times when you write everything down and then someone still ask you a question you have already explained. Again my apologies. I will read so much more carefully.
No, that's absolutely fine! I understand the excitement :) I am very excited myself.
DeleteYeah! Start day! So excited to get going on this beautiful project. Then why am I typing and not crocheting! Off to start!
ReplyDeleteThank You !!!!
ReplyDeleteHi, I have the spirit of the orchid. After round 16 stands that I have to chance to color A. But in the picture I see very good color C. Is this a fault, or?
ReplyDeleteRosalinde
Hi Rosalinde, yes I hvae made a tiny mistake. To prevent you from doing the same - always refer to written instructions only when you change the colors.
DeleteLove this project! The instruction says to use color A for rows 17-18 and 21-22. In the pictures however it looks like color C? Can you explane please.
ReplyDeletePlease, refer to written instructions :)
DeleteI saw on the facebook group that 1tr2tog should be 1dtr2tog (double-treble 2 together) in the English (US) instructions. Is this correct?
ReplyDeleteNot really. Per instructions you should make tr2togs (US) and this is what I made in the video. However is the pictures in the written pattern dtr2tog's are probably shown... you should rely on your gauge and do what looks better.
DeleteHi , Loving this CAL , I found a 3.5mm hook best for me and to do left hand 2dtrtog first to give me a neater top edge . Practising my c2c now as have not tried this before , think I'm going to learn so much, thank you for this experience XX Roll on Wednesday xx
ReplyDeleteI have started the Spirit of the Orchid, but am confused: in the Part One instructions it says for row 15-16 and 19-20 use Yarn A, but the photo on your blog of how the Spirit of the Orchid should look after Part One, shows Yarn C for those rows. Which is correct, please?
ReplyDeletePlease, follow written instructions. Thanks.
