Grinda MAL: coming soon…

Yay! I have been secretly working on a new design for almost a year, and today is the day! I can finally show you sneak peeks and proudly announce there will be a new MAL (make-a-long) coming soon. This design was inspired by my trip to Stockholm last summer. Or, to be precise, by a boat trip to Stockholm archipelago. My new shawl is named Grinda which means “gate” in Norwegian, but it’s also the name of a small island in two hours by boat from Stockholm.

To say I love the sea means to say nothing. I LOVE the sea. And I desperately need to come to the sea at least once a year. To breathe out, to relax, to find way back to myself. Without these short trips I don’t know how I could live… I secretly hope one day, when I am not busy anymore, when I don’t have to take care of anything, when I am (probably) retired – I will move to the sea to live in a small house near the beach, and to be able watching the sea from my small window. Every single day. My sea should be cold, and grey. With pale yellow sun reflected in the waves…
Boat trip to Stockholm archipelago

Every year in the summer me and my husband try to take some days off to travel. Last year we spent a week in Stockholm. It was in July, and the weather was not “summery” at all. Lots of clouds and raining. Just perfect for me! :) It was a bit boring to wander in the city streets under the rain, and we decided to take a boat trip to Stockholm archipelago.

To save as much as possible on the flight I only was allowed to bring hand luggage on the plane. And to fit 8kg I packed only one cake of Whirl. To occupy myself during long hours in the trains, at the airport and on the plane.

I took my Whirl to boat trip, too. And apparently a new shawl design started growing in my hands. Inspired by small islands, Grinda’s nature and magic sea views…

I took lots of pictures on Grinda and other islands. Browsing these pictures fill my heart with precious memories. And today I invite you to join me on a virtual boat trip. Perhaps, you love the sea as much as I do. Or this design will mean something else to you. But anyway I hope you will enjoy it.

Grinda MAL will officially begin on July 11th, 2018 when first part of the pattern will be released on my blog. The pattern will be FREE and new instructions will be released weekly. There will be five parts in total.

This design was kindly sponsored by Scheepjes. My shawl uses just one cake of Whirl yarn (you can also choose Frosted Whirl or Wooly Whirl). But because the entire cake is needed to complete the shawl I would recommend to additionally order one cake of Whirlette yarn in matching color, just to be on the safe side (in case your gauge will differ from mine significantly). Leftovers can be used to either extend the shawl (instructions are given in the pattern) or to make the fringe.

If you are not sure which Whirls and Whirlettes match, please, check THIS useful information on Simy’s blog.

Whirl and Whirlette yarns are available in your local Scheepjes shops or via online retailers: Wool Warehouse*, Deramores* and Black Sheep Wools* (all three in UK with international shipping), Caro’s atelier (NL and Europe), Knotty House* (Canada).

  1. Hello,
The new pattern looks exciting! I Do enjoy many of your patterns! But, I need to inform you that the correct name for ”gate” is ”grind” in singularis Swedish. Plural ”Gates” is: ”grindar”. So, there are no word in Swedish called ”grinda”, it desn’t excist, I’m sorry to say. Glad that you enjoyed our country! Next time you ate welcome to see the north part!

I've seen a lot of interest in your pattern on some russian crafting groups that i follow and wanted to offer to translate the pattern into russian so that you could release it officially along with other languages. (Of course, free of charge, and you'll have all the rights of the translation).

  6. Hello, I love your pattern so much ❤ I'd like to go through, and looking for appropriate yarn. I'm from the Czech Republic and eant to byu some yarn here, I found some cotton whirl yarn, very lovely colors, but they are 900m long. The Scheepjes you suggest is 1000m. Is 900m enough for the whole Grinda? Thank you in advance 🌞🌻 Petra

  11. Hi, Excited about the project, just bought the yarn from Knotty House. I am a fairly loose crocheter. Should I go for the 3mm crochet?

I was in Prague two years ago for four weeks. Loved it and the Czech people. Learned a few words, but the language is HARD! Best Regards

  17. I adore this pattern. I am normally a knitter but am an intermediate crocheter. I’m totally confused about the the picot stitch that shows up in 20th row of the Grinda shawl. Could you possibly walk me through this stitch. How do I do “1pc in NEXT ST”. That’s where I’m confused. Thank you for the beautiful pattern and any help you can give.

  18. Hi Tatsiana!
I purchased your Grinda pattern and I'm on row 39 and it doesn't seem to work out. as I have the chain 4 (dc and ! chain) from row 38 at the very end of the row left over. I've checked and re-checked and I have 76 dc's and 75 chain spaces on that side on row 38 as pattern states. What could I have done wrong?? HELP!!
