Introduction
Grinda shawl design was inspired by a boat trip to Stockholm archipelago. The MAL consists of 5 parts. Each celebrating the love for the sea and wild nature of a small Grinda island. Grinda MAL was kindly sponsored by Scheepjes.
Difficulty Level: Beginner – Advanced Beginner. No tricky stitches, easy crochet fabric.
Size: the size of your finished shawl will depend on the yarn and hook you use, and on your personal gauge. My shawl is approx. 180cm/70.8” wide across and approx. 85cm/33.5” high.
Extended version is 208cm/81.8” wide and 95cm/37.4” high.
Full Reveal
Last week sneaks peeks and the story behind Grinda shawl were published, and I am grateful for the love your gave this design. Even without seeing a full reveal. But today I will finally show it to you, and I hope you will not be disappointed.
As you can see, Grinda shawl is a pretty simple and straightforward design. Each part represents something connected to the sea and islands, and I will tell you a new story every week. I wanted to play with filet crochet, but to create a filet fabric in a little bit different way.
I made three samples in total. One of them uses just one cake of Whirl 769 Blackberry Mint Chip. This is a small version of Grinda shawl. And if you choose to make it, you should be very careful with the gauge not to run out of the yarn.
My second sample uses Woolly Whirl 472 Sugar Sizzle and Whirlette 854 Blueberry. I couldn’t find a 100% matching Whirlette, and just took a similar colour. Even though the gradient colour change is not smooth, the shawl still looks very organic. And this is also an example of extended, or plus-size shawl.
Check a complete guide on how to match Whirls and Whirlettes on Simy’s blog HERE. But again, if you don’t find matching colors, you can use similar ones.
And my third sample was made with three different Whirlettes: 852 Frosted, 860 Ice, 865 Chewy. I had lots of leftovers, but not enough in one color to make a full extension of the shawl. So I decided to make a fringe instead.
And here are four samples completed by wonderful ladies who helped me testing the pattern:
1. By Hilde Tindlund. Whirl 789 Tasty Nom Nom, Whirlette 855 Grappa. Extended Version. Photo credit - Ida Christin Foss
2. By Laura Jackson. Whirl 758 Lavenderlicious. Small version.
3. By Nina Mayer. Whirl 767 Melting Macaron, Whirlette 866 Bubble. Extended version
4. By Lori Baran. Whirl 755 Blueberry Bambam, Whirlette 860 Ice. Extended version.
Materials
Yarn. Grinda Shawl uses one cake of Whirl (or Woolly Whirl, or Frosted Whirl) yarn by Scheepjes. Depending on the gauge and personal crochet style more yarn can be required to complete the shawl. To be on the safe side it is recommended to add one cake of Whirlette yarn in matching color. Leftovers can be used for a shawl extension (given in the pattern) or a fringe. Solid version of Grinda Shawl uses three cakes of Whirlette (see above).

DeleteI would really like to make the shrug it looks lovely , my favourite colours .
ReplyDeleteThank you! but please note that will be not a shrug, but a triangle shawl. :)
DeleteWhat a beautifull shawl. I think, 8th July must be 8th August.
ReplyDeleteHi Claudia, yes I have fized this already :) Thank you!
DeleteWow! Great shot.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I need to find yarn but want to complete this MAL.
ReplyDeletePlease, look into light and fingering yarns. Not necessarily gradient.
DeleteOh my goodness! I have a granddaughter being born in August and have struggled finding a lightweight pattern worthy of honoring her. This looks perfect! I hope I can figure out how to make it square for a blanket!
ReplyDeleteHi Mary! this shawl is half square, so turn it into a full square will not be a problem at all.
DeleteSo how do I find the pattern for this shawl?
ReplyDeletehi Penni, the pattern will be released in parts on my blog. It's a MAL (make-a-long). First part will go LIVE on July 11th. you can also subscribe to my blog not to miss a single bit :)
DeleteSo excited to start, my yarn has arrived - Salted Caramel Matcha whirl with Bilberry whirlette - I love salted caramel so had to choose the colour too. The shawl looks absolutely beautiful I can’t wait to get started
ReplyDeleteThank you!
Deletelooks great, i havent done an anything-along before so will be a first!
ReplyDeleteThat will be fun! If you are on Facebook, make sure to join one of the groups, too.
DeleteLove it great shawl.
ReplyDeleteLove your shawl.
ReplyDeleteSo gorgeous. Will definitely be joining the MAL
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteI am looking forward to joining, my peppermint patty whirl is ready to go!Got a mint whirlette on the side just for the fun of it.
ReplyDeleteHi Diona, if you have both Whirl and Whirlette, you can make an extended version of Grinda shawl.
DeleteJust purchased my yarn from Deramores and so excited to get started! Is there a Ravelry Group/Thread for this MAL? I have the pattern in my queue, but I couldn't find a discussion specific to the MAL. THANKS!
ReplyDeleteHello, I will create a new thread for Grinda MAL very soon. Thank you for reminding :)
DeleteI love this shawl pattern and will be using slice of cherry pie and frosted whirlette. Do you recommend starting with the lightest color or the darkest color?
ReplyDeleteIt depends only on how you like it best. Please, have a look at two purple shawls. they are made in reverse way. But both are beautiful.
DeleteVery beautiful!! I just love filet crochet too!
ReplyDeleteI cannot wait to start crocheting this beautiful shawl. My colors are Blueberry Bambam for the whirl and Frosted for the whirlette!!!
ReplyDeleteHi, I need advice, which whirlette(s) best matches the whirl Blackberry Mint Chip? I will be working from purple/blue on the inside to green on the outside. Thanks for your guidance
ReplyDeleteI am really exited about Grinda MAL and waiting with licourice yamyam whirl and whirlette. I'd like to make an extended version, is One whirlette enough if I start it before heart pattern?
ReplyDeleteBought my yarn today and can't wait for the first part to be released......
ReplyDeleteI chose Lang yarns sockwool in a gradiënt purple-aubergine(eggplant)-blue.
Sooo, reveal at midnight? ;)
Gorgeous colors and shawls! I thought I left a comment earlier but I can't find it. How long did it take you to make one of these? :)
ReplyDeleteI have the Yarn, I swatched to find the right hook, I have the pattern. I got stuck on the first row after "turn". Going to bed to have another fresh look tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteStunning pattern which I want to make. :-D
all infromation after "turn" is simply stitch count for the row. Don't crochet them.
DeleteI would love to do this as a poncho using two of the pattern. Is it possible to leave the very top triangle out in order to create the neckline? It's just gorgeous!!
ReplyDeleteYes, I think so... you can probably start with Row 16 then.
DeleteI look forward to starting this one it’s lovely
ReplyDeleteI love this pattern and many others you have written. I have bought this pattern and a couple of others, I feel its the least I can do for the amount of enjoyment they have given me.
ReplyDeleteI especially appreciate the effort you go to with yarn weights (yardage) after each section, stitch count and easy to follow. Thanks again.

ReplyDeleteI love this pattern..I just bought a cake of Whirl a few days ago and was looking for a shawl pattern..I 'm not sure I could manage to sign up for this, how can I check it? Thanx..
ReplyDeleteThere is no official sign up for Grinda MAL. you can find links to all parts in this blog post with General information. They are listed in the end of the post.
DeleteI noticed that you paired woolly whirl with whirlette. How do those two go together as the yarn composition is different? Do you know how thosr two yarns will look after they get some wear?
ReplyDeleteI haven't noticed any difference at all. And I don't think two yarns will look differently after being worn. Also Whirlette is just on the edge of the shawl.
DeleteThe website for the yarn says they areade from the same material..... In fact they have suggested combos of the two
DeleteHi -- Will part 3 be posted today? I loved the first two parts and am hoping to start Part 3 tonight. Crochet hook is at the ready! :-)
ReplyDeleteIt's up on my blog already. And link has been added to this post. Sorry for delay. I forgot to add it here :) but next time just come to my blog (main page) and you will see next part of the MAL).
DeleteBellissimo, ci voglio provare.....
ReplyDeleteThe Sugar Sizzle Whirl is 70% cotton and 30% wool. The suggested blueberry whirlette is 60% cotton and 40% acrylic. They are different but mostly cotton. Definitely the care should be cold hand wash and lay flat to dry. Cotton shrinks, pretty sure wool does too (never worked with wool before). It should be fine if you don’t apply heat and stretch it out to semi-block every time you need to launder it.
ReplyDeleteSehr schönes Tuch. Ich würde es gerne mit meinen Freundinnen zusammen häkeln...
ReplyDeleteGruß Gabi
I can't find the free pattern ! I went to the blog can't find it!could you please pm me penni neumann on messenger
ReplyDeleteThank you for such a beautiful shawl !! I am having a bit of a problem with Part 2, Row 20 and 21. In looking at row 20 the chart has only 3 popcorn sts showing and instructions have 6 popcorn sts. Row 21 the instruction for the lace st do not match the chart. Am I overlooking something?? Thank you so much in advance for your reply.
ReplyDeleteI'm so embarrassed....my husband printed the instructions in black and white and I just noticed the side note in RED. Sorry to have bothered you. I just love this pattern and am very anxious to finished it for a friends birthday.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely gorgeous! Been waiting ages for a project to call loudly to me - gradient yarn & filet ctrochet? Ingenious! Thank you for sharing the design xx
ReplyDeleteThank you :)
DeleteWhat a gorgeous shawl! I just started a different pattern a few weeks ago with my one cake of Scheepjies. I may make yours with some stash yarn once this is finished. Thanks for sharing. It's really pretty.

DeleteI’ve just found tyhis gorgeous pattern. I’ve missed the MAL, but I’m going to make it anyway. I love the colours you’ve chosen too!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I am glad you like it :)
DeleteLove your shawl! But in the US version the pattern says dc (double crochet ) and in the UK version dc changes to treble crochet. Must i follow the US or the UK version? Sorry about my english.
ReplyDeleteHi Rosa, you can follow any version, just make sure you crochet correct stitches.
DeleteHola! Cómo descargo el patron?
ReplyDeleteI love this Shawl! Can I use your photo in Lavenderlicious in my group (Colorways/Yarn Project Gallery) on Ravelry? I will give full credit and link to your pattern. I can't wait to make this project!
ReplyDeleteYes, please, feel free to use my picture with a direct link to my blog. Thanks!
DeleteHello, thank you for this beautiful pattern. Can it be made in Scheepjes Whirligig and Whirligigette? What would be the difference in the final size? Thank you very much!
ReplyDeleteHi, I've been working on this for a few months now when I have free time and the last month or so I've been stuck on the stitch counts for rows 45-47 and some how I keep ending up with the wrong stitch count for rows 48-49. Any help would be much appreciated as I can't seem to figure out how many stitches go into rows 45-47.
ReplyDeleteI am confused, do you make two of the triangles, then connect them to make the shawl?
ReplyDeleteAre there any accompanying videos for this pattern?
