Whirligig wip is growing…

Last week was amazing! I have been dreaming about going skiing to Austrian Alps. And finally we managed to do that last weekend. It was already warm spring in the air, but still lots of snow in the mountains. Just a perfect combination of the sunny sky and snowy, cripsy “pistes”. I took my Whirligig wip with myself hoping to make some progress in the car. But I was too impressed by the mountain views, and my crochet became really slow. And still I have something to show you. As you can see - my Whirligig cake is half used already! Exciting!

I am not sure if I told you last week, but I’ve challenged myself with designing of a small garment using just one cake of Whirligig. It’s going well so far. But it looks like bigger sizes will need additional cake of Whirligigette. In matching color, of course.

I’ve got my hands on Sapphire to Teal color, and I have two Whirligigettes at home: one is sapphire and another one is teal. Both are a perfect match for the large cake.

But I think sapphire might be better, because it matches one of the tails of Whirligig. So it will be probably easier to use it at the bottom of my garment in case I decide to make it longer. But we’ll see how it goes!

Because Whirligig yarn is so precious, I decided to combine “full” crochet panel with a lace part on top. To add a bit of interest and also to use less yarn whenever possible.

I was inspired by small diamonds in Valyria Shawl by Mijo Crochet (which also uses Whirligig yarn). They reminded me of tiny spring leaves. And because spring is here already, I thought of a lace open stitch pattern with “leaves”.

Gradient yarn is always surprising. It’s impossible to predict how color changes will behave. Because  I am making small size for myself as a test sample, my garment is all about green. And I don’t think there is a chance I will get to light blue on the opposite cake’s tail. But I might use it for the front band – not sure yet…

But I bet in larger sizes it will look amazing – the one full gradient shown throughout the garment.
I hope to be finished soon! And can’t wait to see if my idea works :)

    1. Not right now, but after I release the pattern (and this will happen soon) you will have "leaves pattern" instructions.
