Since last September, when I first heard about “one-kilometer-alpaca-blend-new-gradient-yarn” at Scheepjes Bloggers Days, my heart has been refusing to stay still. I’ve become a little bit addicted to gradient yarn, and have been “whirling” a lot recently. And seriously, what can be better a yummy yarn cake? Right! Another yummy yarn cake. And so it’s here! Whirligig, a brand new yarn from Scheepjes, has finally been released.
Last week I was impatiently waiting for a postman to come, and apparently he brought two gorgeous Whirligig cakes and one matching Whirligigette. I took my hook and started to swatch right away. Of course!
So Whirligig… It’s a new luxury yarn coming in 15 gorgeous soft gradient shades. Some of them are bright, some of them are dusty – just for every taste. The cakes are huge! They come in 450g with 1000m of 20% Alpaca and 80% Virgin Wool yarn. And matching Whirligigettes (“small” Whirligig’s sisters in solid colors) come in 100g cakes and carry approx. 215m of yarn.
Every Whirligig cake is carefully packed into a plastic bag and nice hard paper box. It is very handy, as it helps to keep the cake in place, you don’t need a yarn bowl and you can easily pull either ouside or inside tail. The paper label is fancy. And just overall first impression is amazing.
Because it’s 100% natural woolen fiber, you might expect the yarn to be scratchy, but it’s absolutely not! The drape in both crochet and knit is very soft (especially with larger hook and needles).
Not too hard twist makes Whirligig yarn even softer. When I first saw it I was afraid it might split. So, I experimented a bit and tried crochet hooks by several brands and no splitting was noticed. The color changes (the “fuzzy buzz”) are almost invisible! And another good news is that Whirligig yarn frogs very easily!!
As already mentioned, Whirligig yarn comes in 15 gorgeous colorways. If you are curious to read more about the colors and matches, please, make sure to check Simy’s blog post HERE.
Whirligig and Whirligigette cakes are already available for purchase in local Scheepjes shops and via online retailers:
Wool Warehouse*, Deramores*, Black Sheep Wools* (all in UK with international shipping
Caro's Atelier* (NL and Europe)
Taemombo (Canada and US), Knotty House* (Canada)
And I better come back to my crochet. I’ve decided to challenge myself and “cook” something with just one cake. We’ll see how it goes and if I can come up with something nice. :)

They are so lovely and huge, gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI would love to take my hook and crochet with.
Looking forward to seeing what you make with this gorgeous yarn!! No doubt it will end up on my “must kae this” list.
ReplyDeleteI’m using my first Whirligig and love the yarn but NOT IMPRESSED with the joins, which were tied in knots on my ball. I’ve had to cut and splice to use the yarn so I don’t have ugly knots showing. For the price I am very surprised at this.
ReplyDeleteyou should not have knots in your cake... Please, contact your seller and supply them with the pictures of your yarn.
